The Importance of Volunteering

Since its inception in 1969, the Project Management Institute has relied on volunteers to develop the Project Management framework, organize and manage the Chapters, and develop the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
The Portland Chapter is no different. Founded in 1983 with 29 Charter members, the Chapter is greeting 2019 with more than 2,100 members and a continued need for volunteers.
The Portland Chapter needs you! WHY DO IT?
Volunteering for the Chapter provides network opportunities. Volunteering also presents opportunities to hone existing skills, try new skills, experiment with tasks you may have never thought to do before.
Volunteers are managed through the PMI Volunteer Relationship Management System (VRMS) portal. To search and find an opportunity of interest, you must log in to your PMI account. Once logged on, go to the URL below;

On the VRMS webpage, find the ‘Where would you like to volunteer?’ drop-down menu and select ‘United States. Under the “Chapters/Global Headquarters/GHQ” drop-down menu, select “Portland Chapter” and click on the “Search” button. See image below for details.
A list of current volunteer opportunities will appear. After applying for an open position, the application is forwarded to the approving Vice President or Assistant Vice President for review. If  selected, you will receive an acceptance offer and details from the Director of Volunteers, currently Julie Chu.

Learn the human factory of Behavioral Project Management (BPM)
Education Presentation – Mitigating Cognitive Biases in Projects with Candor.
Behavioral Project Management (BPM) is the integration of behavioral sciences into project management. BPM along with behavioral economics provide cognitive biases to improving project performances. Candor can mitigate several cognitive biases such at courtesy bias, authority bias, optimism and pessimism biases. This session explores how these biases work against us on a project and how to use candor to mitigate them as team members and leaders.
Keynote Presentation – Behavioral Project Management; a Call for a Fundamental Project Management Paradigm Shift. Behavioral Economics, Behavioral Finance, and Behavioral Supply Chain Management all have recognized the human factor by embedding the behavioral sciences throughout their disciplines. It’s now Project Management’s time.

Uncover people’s motivations and converging Information and Operational Technology
Education Presentation – Why Can't We All Just Get Along? Resolve the Management vs. Project Management vs. Staff Dilemmas. Learn tactics on how to uncover people’s motivations, and how to work with management and staff to come together for the good of the project, AND for the good of the people involved. This presentation will include team exercises to help participants identify potential problems in relationships, communications, and work practices. The teams will then work through some simple steps to find viable alternatives to align project work and the associated people.
Keynote Presentation – Converging IT and OT - Driving BPA's Strategy for the Future!
The Bonneville Power Administration released its five-year strategic plan earlier this year, and CIO Ben Berry was and is key in making sure the IT side of the house is contributing. He will share the action items resulting from an enterprise-wide technology assessment, including the opportunities of converging operations and technology talent and moving ERP systems from on-premise to cloud-based, a move designed to cut costs. Converging Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) is more important now than ever. Both IT groups are facing significant challenges in terms of infrastructure, communications, cybersecurity, business processes, and coordination. The need is to integrate organizational structure and real time decision-making processes and applications. Join Ben as he explains how the deep dive into BPA’s IT technology assessment led to 10 breakthrough strategies, resulting in cost management, streamlining of services, and process improvement.

The PMI Portland Chapter offers certification prep courses for project leaders ready to become Project Management Professionals (PMP), individuals looking to establish credibility in the application of project management processes as a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), and Agile professionals looking for formal recognition with the PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) credential.

News from PMI Portland
Dear PMI Members. We have wonderful news! Do you recall Ph.D. candidate Krasimir Karamfilov, pursuing a Ph.D. in Management as a student at Walden University? Well, it is our great privilege and honor to announce his completion of the doctoral research -- with the help of PMI Portland and you, our wonderful members.
To recap: Krasimir was working with the PMI Portland’s Outreach portfolio to secure project teams for the doctoral study. Through various chapter meetings and microphone time, he needed to recruit 66 project teams for the study; which examined the effect of “leaders’” endorsement of workplace fun and an organizational playfulness climate on the creativity of project teams. We will announce the chapter meeting date and time when he will present the findings early next year. Krasimir successfully defended his dissertation in September to complete his Ph.D. Stay tuned to the community page of the PMI Portland Chapter newsletter as we look forward to welcoming Krasimir Karamfilov, Ph.D. in Management, soon.
