Chapter Toastmasters Club
October 2016
PMI Portland Toastmasters club celebrated our 1 year anniversary on June 30, 2016. We finished out the year with 20 dynamic members some new, some charter members. Our goal is 30 members.
We had 2 club members get as far as winning the area contest (a level above the club) for 3 contests. We had an area director in our club, and several of our members achieved leadership and communication awards.
Our club received the highest club award: President’s distinguished award, by achieving all 10 goals set forth by Toastmasters to measure the quality of a club. This measurement includes our members achieving their leadership and communication goals, recruiting new members, officers completing training and fulfilling the club’s administrative duties.
This year we have not 1 but 2 area directors in our club: AJ John who is also a past president of PMI Portland and Sushil Nema who is an instructor in our PMP Prep course.
Club officers are:
We currently have an open Sergeant at Arms position – any volunteers?
Results from our club contests this fall:
Humorous Speech:
- 1st place—Matthew Douglass
- 2nd place—Trish Kelley
Table Topics: Impromptu speaking
- 1st place—Greg Hawkins
- 2nd place—Trish Kelley
April 2016
March was the month we held our spring contests, the evaluation contest, AND the international speech contest!
For the evaluation contest we had a guest speaker give a 5-7 minute speech and our competitors each gave a 2-3 minute evaluation of the speech. Our 1st place winner this year at the PMI Portland Club Level was Dan Murphy, 2nd place was Theo Kersjes. Dan represented the club at the Area 96 contest. Congrats to both Dan and Theo!
The International speech contest is the beginning of the quest to find the next Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking. At our club we had only 1 contestant, Sushil Nema, who represented us at the Area 96 contest…
I am so pleased to announce that Sushil WON with his speech, “What is the Purpose of Your Life.” Sushil will represent our club and Area 96 at the Division H contest on April 16, 2016 at Tektronix Building 38 Auditorium, Zworykin Avenue in Beaverton. Drop by to support Sushil, see some excellent speakers and evaluators, and do some networking!

November 2015
Often articles about Toastmasters focus on the great training for leadership, communication, and presentation skills, and how inexpensive it is. All of this is true. It is the best investment you can make in your education.
What if, instead of telling you how good and inexpensive Toastmasters is, I told you how much fun it is and how supportive your club becomes? How good it feels to get good feedback and more importantly, how great it is to learn about your opportunities for improvement? What if, instead of working on your weaknesses in leadership and communication, you were playing with new ideas and new ways of expressing yourself and strengthening the things you are already good at?
Would you like to give a presentation and have people pull you aside and say, “WOW! I had no idea how great you are at presenting!”? This actually happened to one of our members.
If you join Toastmasters, you will have a chance to hone your listening skills, develop evaluation skills, become confident in your extemporaneous speaking skills and have a great time doing it. These are both keys to successful interviews and stellar networking. Why not come and have a great time in the only Portland Toastmasters club with a focus on project management?
Come as a visitor and see if you want to stay and be a part of one of the most exciting and fun learning experiences around. You can visit us on Wedevenings, 6:30-7:30 pm at the Everest Institute, 4th floor, 9600 SW Oak St, Tigard. We look forward to welcoming you.
PMI Portland club news
Two of our members, Greg Hawkins and Sushil Nema, won the Table topics (impromptu speaking) and Humorous speech contests at our club, and then went on to compete and win at the Area level!
This moved them on to the Division level where they both placed second. As a result, both of them will be going to the District conference on 11/7.
It isn’t too late to get tickets to the Toastmasters conference where you could attend several training sessions and witness the district level Table Topics and Humorous speech contests.

Being put on the spot has never been more fun!
Are you comfortable and confident when you are asked to speak with little to no notice? Would you like to know an easy, fun, and fulfilling way to improve? And to top it off, would you like to earn PDUs while you do?!
Improve your impromptu speaking skills by practicing in a warm, friendly and fun environment. Each meeting we have an opportunity for 4-5 people to speak for 1-2 minutes to a topic that was just handed to them. It is rewarding to watch the progress of all of us in the club.
Come and visit us at PMI Portland Toastmasters. We meet every Wednesday from 6:30 – 7:30 pm at Everest Institute at 9600 SW Oak Street, 4th floor, Tigard, OR 97223. We are the only Toastmasters club in the Portland area with a specific focus on project management.
PMI Portland Toastmasters is thrilled to announce that one of our members, Greg Hawkins, won our club impromptu speaking contest and then went on to win our area contest as well.
Come out on October 17 to support Greg as he competes against the rest of the area contest winners in division H. The contest will be held at Tektronix building 38 at Zworykin Avenue, Beaverton, OR, 97005 from 1-4 pm. Food will be provided and there is no charge for thisevent.
If Greg should win this contest he will advance to the district level and compete on November 7 at the Toastmasters semi-annual conference.

Toastmasters Club Report
PMI Portland held their first Toastmasters meeting Wednesday evening, March 4, 2015.
Our President, Bob Bondaruk, gave opening remarks welcoming everyone. Our Toastmaster was Leanna Lindquist, District Governor of Marketing. Her job was to facilitate the meeting and explain the process as it unfolded.
Our one prepared speech was given by Trish Kelley. The title was "My Journey Through Toastmasters". Trish's speech was evaluated by Mike Goss who gave her some excellent feedback.
We also had an impromptu session which allowed anyone to speak who wished to do so, led by Roger Cook.
After a question and answer session we ended the meeting.
Many thanks to our District 7 Toastmaster leaders, Leanna Lindquist, Roger Cook, and Mike Goss, who came to support us and lend a helping hand as we held our first meeting.
There are still openings for additional charter members of our club. To check us out just come to one of the meetings. We meet every Wednesday, 6:30 pm.
We are looking forward to meeting you!
