Changes to PMI’s CCR Program for PDU Reporting

In case this has slipped under your radar, PMI has re-vamped its PDU reporting requirements.

The changes will not apply until December 1, 2015, and all PDUs earned and reported up to that date will continue to be counted towards the existing reporting requirements structure. However, it is a good idea to start planning your approach to PDU reporting for after December!

You will be able to earn PDUs for all of the activities you did in the past, however the activities will have new minimum and maximum thresholds. Plus, educational credits must be aligned with the PMI Talent Triangle.

The key changes are that the minimum number of PDUs you can claim from Education activities per cycle will increase, and the maximum number of PDUs for activities that give back to the profession will decrease. This includes activities such as creating project management knowledge, volunteering, and working as a practitioner.

Applied to the PMP certification specifically, a minimum of 35 PDUs (of the total of 60) will be required per cycle from Education activities (up from the current minimum of 15), and a maximum of 25 PDUs can be earned from Giving Back to the Profession (down from the current 45). This means that 60% of PDUs will be required from educational activities.

In addition, the Education category of PDU reporting is now detailed out within a PMI Talent Triangle, which determines which type of education PDUs you must target to achieve among three categories; Technical Project Management, Leadership, and Business and Strategic management. PMPs are required to obtain a minimum of 8 PDUs per skill type. This new Talent Triangle was identified through market research into the subset of skills that employers require of project managers.

Note that as before, the number of PDUs required per category depends on the type of certification you hold.

Happy certification up-keeping!
