Book Review Program

With partnership of PM World Journal

Purpose

  • To distribute information on current or relevant book publications.
  • Professional development opportunity – to give chapter members a means to expand their professional knowledge, have their contributions published, and earn PDUs.
  • To encourage and stimulate awareness of current thinking on project management topics.
  • To expand the chapter newsletter content.

How it Works

  • Newsletter staff will obtain free books from PMI Publications and other publishers. Publishers will distribute recent books they would like to promote.
  • Physical copies of books for review will be available at the monthly Chapter meetings.
  • The Newsletter will also maintain a list of books and participating publishers online that are available for review each month.  Please check out the Newsletter Bookshelf page to see books we currently have available for review and information on publishers.
  • Anyone connected with the Portland Chapter may request a specific title from the list of participating publishers.
  • For requested titles, newsletter staff will attempt to obtain a free book copy.
  • Once a book review is accepted, the reviewer should prepare a review within 45 days.

Chapter Meetings

  • Books from publishers will be available for display at Chapter meetings.
  • A short announcement will be made about the books each month.
  • Meeting attendees can look at the books.
  • Anyone interested in completing a book review can select a book. They must then commit to completing a book review, or returning the book by the next Chapter meeting.

Publication

  • Reviewers should use the standard Book Review Template
  • A completed review should be submitted via email to books@pmi-portland.org.
  • Once editing is complete, a final copy will be sent back for final approval.
  • The completed review will be published in the next Chapter newsletter.
  • It will also be distributed to PM World Journal for consideration; David Pells is the Managing Editor. The reviewer grants permission for reviews to be published in PMWJ.

PDUs

  • Book reviews are eligible for PDUs.
  • Refer to the PMI credential handbook for detailed information.
  • Generally, reviewers should use Category C (Self Directed Learning) for time spent reading the book and Category D (Creating New Project Management Knowledge) for time spent writing the review.
  • Reviewers are responsible for managing their own PDU submissions and following PMI requirements.

Expectations of Reviewers

  • Book reviews submitted in MS Word format using the Newsletter Book Review Template
  • Timely submittal–generally within 45 days of getting the book or approved assignment.
  • Professional content, thought out and expressed.
  • Reviews should be between 500 and 1200 words.
