Keynote Presentation

Understanding Agile from a PMP's Perspective! Exploding the Myth that Agile is not in the PMBOK®

Many PMPs have been told, often by well-meaning but uninformed, “experts” that Agile is outside the PMBOK® Guide and there is no role for project managers. Those myths have no basis in fact!

Fact #1 – Long before the Agile Manifesto the PMBOK® Guide included Rolling Wave Planning, Progressive Elaboration, and Decomposition… three core concepts Agile simply can’t live without.

Fact #2 – The Agile focus on serving the customer, as practiced by many agilists, has a blind spot because it ignores the needs of the company – what we call the organizational customer – for budgeting and sophisticated scheduling tools that none of the Agile frameworks provide.

Those two facts are the tip of the iceberg! Learn the whole truth during this powerful presentation.

Recent PMI research shows 67% of organizations use Agile Project Management today. With over 100,000 Scrum Masters it is a fact that Agile has gained recognition and credibility in mainstream organizations including many non-software industries that are in your future!?!

Perhaps that explains why the PMI-ACP® has become the fastest growing certification in PMI history! This presentation is an opportunity for you to achieve clarity about if, when, and how to use Agile. It will be an energized, powerful presentation with lots of time for Q&A.

Increasing Your Project Success through Earned Value Management

In the recent October 2013 chapter educational presentation called “The True Fundamentals of Project Management”, Brad Hermanson stated that one of the most effective tools of project management is the use of Earned Value Management (EVM).  He has found that EVM significantly improves project control and also provides very useful information to stakeholders, significantly increasing stakeholder satisfaction.

Several attendees at the talk raised their hands and said “Can you explain earned value project management?”  Brad offered to bring an existing talk on EVM to the chapter to provide details and explain why EVM is so valuable.   This is that talk.

Brad will demystify EVM and explain how to use it.  At its core, EVM basically addresses a simple question we ALWAYS ask each other on projects: “How are you doing, particularly compared to where you thought you would be?”  EVM isn’t that hard to use - in fact, it can be downright easy.  But it does take discipline.  In this talk Brad will explain how to use EVM and will provide practical tips on its use.
