Keynote Presentation

International Marine Research Benefits from Project Management

Coordinating a science research project across 8000 miles and 11 time zones is a big challenge. The Philippine Mollusk Symbiont ICBG works to discover new drugs from marine biodiversity while supporting economic development and education in the Philippines. This presentation describes the project and some of its hurdles, and how project management concepts and techniques helped foster success.

About the Speaker

Margo Haygood was born in Chicago, Illinois. She became interested in marine science in high school, and in college she studied at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory, where she fell in love with marine microbiology. After completing a Ph.D at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, she studied at the University of Washington and worked briefly as a science bureaucrat in Washington, DC. She joined Scripps Institution of Oceanography as a professor in 1987, and came to the Institute of Environmental Health at Oregon Health & Science University in 2005. She became Project Director for the Philippine Mollusk Symbiont ICBG in 2008. This multi-institution international project required some new tools and thinking, so she studied project management with Jeff Oltmann and used this knowledge to help the project grow and thrive.
