John R. Patton, Sept. 15, 1944 - Oct. 4, 2018
On October 4, 2018, the project management community lost a dedicated professional and advocate. John Patton, President & CEO of Cadence Management Corporation, passed away suddenly doing what he loved – working on a project -- at his farm in The Dallas, Oregon -- building a new home.
John loved project management. His passion for project management was ignited at Tektronix where he attended a PM course taught by Ron LaFleur. John was so inspired that he too wanted to make a difference in the lives of people working on projects that he started his own company– Cadence Management Corporation. That was in 1983, when he also joined the PMI-Portland Chapter.
For 35 years, John lead the organization and grew it to be a first-class international PM training and consulting firm. He was persistent in making sure Cadence supported the PM profession by sponsoring and exhibiting at PMI events, giving countless presentations for PMI, being an early adopter of the PMI Registered Education Provider program, and ensuring his staff had time to volunteer for PMI -- at the Chapter, Regional, and Global levels.
Over the years, Cadence had many achievements. John’s proudest moment was receiving PMI’s distinguished award “PMI Continuing Professional Education Provider of the Year” in 2009. His commitment to quality was supported by obtaining ISO 9001 certification – unheard of for a training and consulting firm. Under new leadership, the company continues this commitment today.
John truly believed in the next generation having the life skills they need to manage projects. He volunteered his time to the PMI Educational Foundation, including serving as Chair of the PMIEF Board of Directors and being a generous donor. Whether he was sharing project management knowledge with teachers, professionals, non-profits, government agencies, corporations, and others, John loved coming to work everyday. Based on the condolences that the family has received from around the globe, John will never know the tremendous impact he made on the many lives he touched.
We lost a dedicated professional and advocate. We lost a PM champion. Thank you, John, for your years of service to the PM profession, the Institute, and the PMI-Portland Chapter.
In a fitting tribute to John, his family requests “...memorial contributions be made to PMIEF which brings Project Management knowledge to youth worldwide.”
