Sep2021 Article VoM Matthew JenkinsPMI’s Portland Chapter named Scott White January 2022 Volunteer of the Month. Scott holds a Master of Science, Engineering Management (MSEM) from Santa Clara University and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Graceland University and is currently the IT Director at Bridgewell Resources in Tigard. Bringing with him so many years of IT experience, Scott joined the Chapter’s volunteer ranks in 2016 as a Web Administrator.

When COVID-19 hit in Spring 2020 we experienced lifestyle changes as stay-at-home orders went into effect and remote working environments became the norm. As restrictions continued, we became reliant on our electronic resources to perform our jobs and stay connected with friends and family. To maintain our presence PMI Portland Chapter adapted as well, offering virtual Chapter meetings that provided not only a connection but continuous learning opportunities. These meetings often included an educational presentation along with a keynote presentation. Personal networking has been difficult to maintain during the pandemic, but since networking sessions have resumed, see the event calendar.  Scott’s expertise is essential and kept PMI Portland’s community connected as we evolved with these changing times.

Volunteers are needed for most portfolios throughout PMI’s Portland Chapter and, as Scott mentioned in November, “Volunteering brings networking and community building to the forefront for those needing assistance. And for those happily employed, it affords the chance to give back and celebrate those successes together.”

Scott was Volunteer of the Month as recent as November 2020 where he discussed the benefits of volunteering. He noted that volunteering for the Chapter provides network opportunities; it allows one to hone existing skills, try new ones and provide new experiences. As a volunteer Web Administrator Scott provides website-related support to our members, works to on-board our new volunteers, and supports all web content updates including roundtables, events and more.

Previously, Scott discussed the personal benefits volunteering has provided him. But, as mentioned in this article, our dependence on digital technologies and web-based assistance has become vital in our daily interactions. Repeating Scott’s volunteer month designation so soon is a heartfelt thank you for the vital service he offers during this unpresented time.
