May 1, 2020 - May 19, 2020 Vote now!

COVID-19 Update from PMI Portland

Due to the current order by Oregon Governor Kate Brown to avoid gatherings and shelter-in-place – and for the safety of our members, all PMI Portland Chapter in-person events are cancelled until further notice. Our volunteer staff are working diligently to provide our members with other options, including virtual events and webinars. Check back regularly to see our progress!

Please follow social distancing guidelines, stay at home except for essential tasks, and be safe.

Welcome to the Project Management Institute (PMI) Portland Chapter!

We are more than 2,300 members strong, representing project management professionals from myriad industries, government and non-profit sectors in the Portland Metro area. Last year, we celebrated our 35th anniversary as a local chapter of the global PMI organization, which chalked up its 50th birthday in 2019.

PMI has more than 300 chapters worldwide, from Nova Scotia to New Zealand; Guatemala to Ghana; and Austria to India. PMI Portland Chapter is one of the largest in western North America. Our goals align with our parent organization’s mission to advance careers for those who consider project, program or portfolio management their profession.

At the Portland Chapter, we accomplish this by creating a culture and community that facilitates professional growth through education and volunteerism. We strive to be an innovative leader in the region, making individuals and organizations more successful while also promoting ethics, quality, knowledge, skills, integrity and leadership.

In addition to our formal membership base, we have connections with some 5,000+ affiliated professionals, organizations and partners. Jobs captured within our broad community include business analysts, program managers, engineers, developers, project coordinators and managers. We provide high quality, relevant education, certification, job referral and networking opportunities to our professionals.

Opportunities Abound

Through PMI Portland Chapter, you can tap into educational events and local courses, build strong relationships with other professionals in your field through networking at monthly chapter meetings or one of the increasing numbers of Chapter-sponsored social events. As a member, you also open the door to a wealth of additional benefits, including entrance into global PMI’s resource library where you can build your skillset, conduct research and have discussions with professionals around the world.

As an all-volunteer-run organization, we are always in need of folks willing to give their time to advancing the profession. For as few as a couple hours a month, you can build your leadership skills, gain PDUs necessary for certification renewal, and develop a “deep bench” network to support your career goals.

We also rely on our sponsors who partner with us to provide an assortment of products and services, again designed to make your job as in project management easier. We continue to look for new partners to join us in advancing our mission.

A New Look

Soon, we will undergo a vast revamp of our PMI Portland brand to stay aligned with our global PMI association as it transforms to ensure it provides “significant support at key inflection points in our customers’ professional journeys, from their first interaction to their retirement from the profession.” (from the PMI 2017 Strategic Plan)

You will see a new logo, new look, feel and navigation on this platform, as well as changes to many other tools we use to reach you. As a chapter, we are focusing our efforts to reach those new to the profession, those arriving here due to a career transition, and those who are veterans of project management. YOU will be the focus of our work; we want to hear your desires, hopes and expectations for programming, educational offerings, how to best communicate with you, and what volunteer roles you’re willing to take on to keep our organization moving forward! Feel free to drop a line to Penelope Leudtke, our 2019-20 Chapter President, or any of the Board members you find on our Leadership page. We hope our inboxes soon overflow!

Stay Tuned…

Chapter Toastmasters Club

  • Do you want stellar presentation skills?
  • Would you like to be comfortable speaking in front of any group extemporaneously on a moment’s notice?
  • Would you like to develop your leadership skills amongst other PMI members?
  • Would you find value in presenting to a group of project managers before having to step in front of a group of people at work?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, we have a solution for you!

PMI Portland Toastmasters!

We first got the idea for a PMI only Toastmasters Club when talking to a board member from another chapter who created a toastmasters club specifically for their PMI members. I was immediately intrigued.

I had committed to my own journey in Toastmasters in 2009 and loved it. The things I love the most about Toastmasters is it is a perfectly safe environment to practice my speaking and presentation skills. Imagine having that environment with other project managers who would understand my jargon and my travails.

Toastmasters international is an organization outside of PMI that provides a learn while doing course in Leadership, speaking and presentation skills. Toastmasters has their own successful process and has clubs across the world.

PMI Portland Toastmasters began meeting on March 4. We have not yet chartered (become an official club) because we are having difficulty getting commitment from enough people to satisfy the requirements for being able to charter. I’m writing this article to ask for your assistance with achieving our goal of chartering our PMI Portland Toastmasters Club. Without your help we will fold the club and have our existing members move to other clubs.

The cost to be a PMI Portland Toastmasters member is a onetime fee of $20 if you have never been a toastmaster before, and $36 every 6 months to maintain the membership. This equates to approximately $1.38 per meeting or $6 monthly. The fees are prorated so those of you who join in June would pay a lower fee.

If you think you would like to participate in a Toastmasters Club with other PMI members, I encourage you to attend a meeting and join the club prior to the end of June this year.

If this club folds there will not be a PMI specific club although there are several open Toastmaster’s clubs in Portland.

I, and the other charter members of PMI Portland Toastmasters Club, look forward to seeing you at a meeting soon.
