The Promise of the Agile Attorney
The global legal industry has entered an unprecendented period of change due to the influx of new technology, increasing pressure from clients to deliver legal services with time and budget constraints, and the rise of alternative providers like LegalZoom and others. John Grant will discuss his experiences, his successes, and some challenges he's encounterd bringing Agile project management and workflow improvement techniques to the legal industry, helping both lawyers and non-lawyers better understand and deliver client value.
About the Speaker
John Grant is an attorney and legal operations consultant. He has spent most of his career at the intersection of the legal, business and technology worlds where he has studied emerging techniques that are revolutionizing the productivity of manufacturing, software development, product design, and entrepreneurship (among other disciplines). John has adapted methodologies from Lean, Agile, and Lean Startup for use by lawyers to help them get more done in less time, deliver greater client value, make more money, and have better control over their professional and personal lives. Bridging the (Real or Perceived?) Chasm between Agile and Traditional Project Management
The June meeting is the last before our Chapter summer break. This talk will provide food for thought on how to bridge the chasm (real or perceived?) between agile and traditional project management. I will use case studies from my own non-software project work across the country as well as the recent presentation by Scott Haight (SolarWorld PMO) to illustrate commonalities we all have in managing projects, and how agile principles and practices can be incorporated in a seemingly non-agile environment. The talk is dedicated to the memory of a great teacher and friend, Jeff Crow, who said, Don't adopt the monkey!
Learner Outcomes: 1.Learn how agile and lean principles and frameworks have been applied to non-software projects in state, city, university research, and business projects across the country. Understand how PMI aspirational and mandatory standards compare to agile principles. Learn how different facilitation and retrospective techniques can be brought in to support group work within any project
About the Speaker
Alicia Lanier is intrigued by the possibility of a world of (non-software) teams that understand the power of being agile, and have tools to help them get there. When I started my own company 12 years ago, I gave myself the gift to study anything that piqued my curiosity. That gift led me to my exposure to agile principles and frameworks, human systems dynamics, servant and facilitative leadership concepts, importance of retrospectives, facilitation methods, and Lean. I help teams from municipalities and state organizations, universities, and businesses achieve big dreams and manage complex projects using these principles and tools. Many of these teams consist of engineers, planners, regulators, reseearchers, and others who may have otherwise never heard of agile.
